Das Spiel erschien weltweit am 25. Juli 2017 für PlayStation 4, Xbox One und Windows.

Ein auf dem Battle-Royale-Genre basierender Standalone-Modus, Fortnite Battle Royale, erschien am 26. September 2017. Dieser Modus ist im Unterschied zum Hauptspiel Fortnite USK-ungeprüft. Seit dem 13. März 2018 ist Fortnite Battle Royale ebenfalls für Apple-iOS-Geräte im Rahmen eines Invite-Events verfügbar. Die mobile Version des Battle-Royale-Ablegers soll ebenfalls bald auch für Android erscheinen.
